Jobs
We have lost 3 million manufacturing jobs since 2000. By 2015 one study shows that 3.3 million tech service jobs will be lost overseas. If that happens, we will lose billions in lost wages and taxes. The unemployment rate is 5.6%; however, that rate only measures those aged 16 or over who are actively seeking a job. Many have given up.
Economics will tell you that as we recover from the bottom of the business cycle and as we approach 5% unemployment, which is the full employment rate, we will see both inflation and higher interest rates if government spending and deficits continue to rise. Bush's tax cuts and the low interest rates from the Federal Reserve have successfully dampened the effects of the recent recession. The question now lies in if we have bought a short term recovery that will shortly lead to a downward shift when interest rates rise.
We need to focus on long term growth proposals that will permanently create jobs and not just short term political measures. I have entitled my campaign committee "It's the Kids, Smartie" because I believe that it's not just the economy. If we raise up a mass of children who come from single parent homes who have one or even two parents in prison, who acquire STDs at a rate of 3,000,000 a year among teenagers, and who graduate from schools that are almost a combat zone, they will not become the most productive workers in the world and U.S. Americans will be less competitive in the world marketplace.
However, if we do what Socrates would do and cease promoting to our children examples of murder, adultery and vice, we can have a more disciplined, highly trained work force where more of our children are able to achieve their maximum potential and productivity. I believe that U.S. Americans have the greatest potential to compete effectively in the world market place but that we are not achieving that potential because of the almost full scale retreat we are engage in on this cultural war.
If a man has nothing more to live for than a few moments in a strip bar or an occasional prostitute, how much will he care about his job? If a man has a loving wife and kids to work for, he will value his job.
