“This is good,” Tholen, who works for the Department of Natural Resources, said Sunday as he drove around Lake Shafer. “I like seeing a boating season start off this way.” The lake seemed to be busy with tubers, skiers, speedboats and jet skis as residents and visitors alike marked the traditional opening of lake season with a splash.

Great vacation weather usually means a lot of lake traffic, Tholen said. That makes water safety especially important to keep in mind, he said, as boaters head out for fun. Indiana Conservation officers typically are out in full force on weekends. This weekend, they’ve mostly given warnings to remind boaters of the rules, Tholen said.

However, one particular infraction is sure to net a ticket. “The life jacket requirement is my biggest thing,” Tholen said. “If you don’t have a life jacket, you’re getting a ticket.” Indiana State law requires that boaters carry with them enough accessible, appropriately sized life jackets for everyone on board, Tholen said. Boats longer than 16 feet also must carry a throwable flotation device. Boat and jet ski drivers must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver’s license, Tholen said.

Conservation officers’ main concerns as boating season ramps up is to make sure boaters are safe while they have fun, he said.
